Mel Olsen – AWARE ARC team

Mel Olsen

What is your role?

I am the Community Engagement and Training Officer (CETO) for Lucy’s Project in the Hawkesbury region for the AWARE ARC Project and also work as the Anti-violence Worker at the Women’s Cottage.

Why did you decide to work on the AWARE ARC project?

I have worked as a DFV worker in the Hawkesbury area for over 20 years and I’m aware of the limited services that can support victims and their animals. I have listened to many stories of people perpetrating domestic and family violence (DFV) against animals, to harm them and their human family members.

What do you hope to achieve through the project?

I’d like to see more options for victims and their animals to stay together and be supported to leave the violence. I’d like to ensure that AWARE ARC equips workers and volunteers across the DFV, community and animal services sectors with more skills, knowledge and tools to support people and animals experiencing DFV.
